The University of Michigan was founded in 1817 as Catholepistemiad or University of Michigania. In 1821, a new act was passed that changed the name of the institution to the University of Michigan. The School moved from Detroit to Ann Arbor in 1837 and the first classes were held in 1841. A new state constitution was adopted in 1850. The School was founded in 1924. B. Joseph White, who was the dean in 1990, implemented the signature innovation called MAP (Multidisciplinary Action Project) that introduced experiential learning approach in management education and is still a hallmark of the Michigan’s MBA program. In September 2004, the School was renamed as Stephen M. Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan following a $100 million donation from philanthropist, visionary and leader Stephen M. Ross.
The mission of the University of Michigan is to serve the people of Michigan and the world through preeminence in creating, communicating, preserving and applying knowledge, art and academic values, and in developing leaders and citizens who will challenge the present and enrich the future.
The Full-time MBA program at Ross challenges the students to come up with innovative business solutions through its unique and comprehensive curriculum that offers extensive hands-on experience for the students, so that they are fully aware of the ambiguities and complexities of real-world projects before venturing into a full-time job. Ross has established excellence in leadership development over the years by producing graduates who can lead with confidence, integrity, drive and empathy. The Ross Leadership Initiative’s Crisis Challenge is one such platform, where the students assume the role of senior manager and tackle a devastating crisis in business. The entire experience teaches the students to navigate through ambiguity, establish a clear point of view based on the information available, and arrive at well-informed decisions after rigorous analysis. Students imbibe the different aspects of leadership such as resilience and flexibility by adapting to the turbulent circumstances and emerge as successful business leaders. The Sanger Leadership Center plays an instrumental role in creating positive and impactful future business leaders. The Story Lab is an initiative by the Center that helps the students polish their communication skills, encourages them to be active listeners, and works on their body language and vocal tones. The Legacy Lab organizes a series of workshops, where the students explore their core values and personal attributes and chalk out a plan to leverage their talents and skills effectively to achieve their goals. The Impact Challenge encourages the students to create a high-impact venture at Detroit by engaging with individuals and organizations around Detroit. Students collaborate and work as a team to identify opportunities, develop business models, pitch-in ideas, and develop cutting-edge solutions in order to generate breakthrough ideas.
Ross is known worldwide for its signature Multidisciplinary Action Project MAP. Ross has been a pioneer in introducing action learning in management education and MAP embodies this philosophy. Due to this initiative, students are able to think independently, work without sufficient data, change their minds midstream, negotiate and inquire. Students work in teams for seven weeks over a full-time project in order to develop an innovative solution to real-world business challenge faced by the client company. Students can choose from a wide range of global MAP projects offered at Ross by selecting the type of organization (start-up, non-profit, public, multinational corporations) they want to work for and the industry or sector (real estate, healthcare, banking, etc.) that aligns with their career plans. Students delve into the complexities facing the organization concerning areas such as pricing, market entry, innovation and operations, etc., and hone their analytical and problem-solving skills. The project culminates with a formal presentation and written report by the students showcasing their analysis and recommendations to the client as well as the Ross faculty.
Ross’s mission is to develop global business leaders who make a positive impact on the world and society. Students can participate in a semester long study abroad exchange program or an intensive short-term international study program. By participating in the Global Immersion course, students can witness the ways of conducting business in an international setting. Travelling to countries like China and Israel and making company visits, students explore the principles and frameworks that drive the economy and business in these countries. Students can study for an entire semester in one of the partner exchange schools and learn about the current business trends in the host country. Center for International Business Education and Research CIBER supports Ross’s global initiatives to provide international business education through a variety of seminars, conferences and resources that enable the students to experience foreign cultures, languages and work environments.
