The eldest son of Tata Group founder Jamsetji Tata, Sir Dorabji had founded the Dorabji Tata Trust in 1932. Lauded as one of the oldest and non-sectarian Indian organizations, it is known for supporting and maintaining schools, educational institutions and hospitals. Along with this, the trust also endows relief aid in times of natural calamity, disaster, catastrophe like floods, famines and earthquakes.
It provides J.N. Tata Endowment for the Higher Education for Indians offers scholarships for students to study aboard. Though, it does not cover the entire tuition fee amount, the loan amount varies from Rs.1, 50,000/- and Rs.6, 00,000/-, depending on the norms laid out by the trust. Few of the elected scholars may also qualify for a gift scholarship from the Jamsetji Tata Trust as well as a Travel Grant from the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust. It is completely based on the sole discretion of the Trustees of the respective Trusts. The amount of gift scholarship can go up to a maximum of Rs.10, 00,000/-
The final selection is made on the basis of the interview which is normally held in Mumbai between March and June.
The Scholarship Program
The transparency and inherent flexibility of the program adds to the uniqueness of the scholarship program. The important details of the program are as follows:
1. It is applicable for all Indians, irrespective of their caste, creed, community, religion and geographical location
2. It caters to individuals up to 45 years of age. They can be fresh graduates or mid-career professionals as well as research scholars which years of work experience.
3. The newly emerging fields of study which are important for the country would be given more preference.
4. Academicians who are mid-career professionals craving to go to foreign countries for further training can also apply for the grant.
Submission Criteria
• The one-time scholarship is endowed at the beginning of the course to the eligible students
• The candidates applying for the scholarship should have secured the admission in the respective educational institutes they have applied.
• The students who are still awaiting their admission can also apply for the scholarship, though they would be selected only if they secure an admission.
The Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and J.R.D. Tata Trust also offer scholarships for undergraduate studies in India in accordance to the defined selection criteria for the year. Applications are accepted only through colleges.
