Fellow Program in Management prepares young researchers to be ‘out-of-the-box’ and innovative thinkers and problem solvers in the fields of Financial Economics, Accounting, Information System, Organizational Behavior and Strategy and Marketing. ISB FPM Program Overview
A fully residential program, it has been designed, keeping in mind the student’s future in the academia. It requires 4-5 years of full-time study in which the students need to work closely with their guide. The students can pursue their independent research interests. The first two years are academically very rigorous and extensive coursework is demanded in the basic disciplines of management.
ISB FPM: Typical Stages of Progression
Year 1: Complete the core courses in the area specific advanced courses
Year 2: Complete area specific advanced courses. Assist on a Research Project which will be supervised by a Student’s Guide. Work on a Research Paper. Write FPM Comprehensive exam as the end of the second year approaches.
Based on all the above mentioned projects, papers and examination results, the student’s FPM candidacy is decided.
Year 3: Complete research related work on additional area-specific coursework. Identify a topic for the Dissertation as well as the Dissertation Chairperson and Dissertation Committee members. By the end of the third year, the student should send the topic of approval for the dissertation.
Advanced FPM Candidacy is achieved after the topic of dissertation is approved by the committee.
Year 4 and 5: Work on the dissertation, complete the subsequent and needed revisions that are recommended by the FPM Committee
ISB FPM: Areas of Specialization
FPM is offered in seven areas: Accounting, Information Systems, Marketing, Operations Management, Financial Economics, Organizational Behavior and Strategy
Accounting: The students are taught to research with the usage of latest empirical techniques. Along with intellectual curiosity, the student should have strong aptitude for quantitative analysis. Faculty research includes corporate governance, auditing profession, accounting conservatism, executive compensation and earning management.
Information Systems: Quantitative tools such as econometrics and game theory are used in the course, along with the extensive use of strategy and economics. The faculty has strong publication records in academic journals like Information Systems Research and Management Information Systems Quarterly and Management Science.
Marketing: As this is an inter-disciplinary field, theory and knowledge is plugged in from different sources such as economics, mathematics, statistics, sociology and psychology. It basically deals with four main entities—business regulators, distributors, competitors and customers.
Operations Management: The students are taught the quantitative analysis framework of several disciplines such as supply chain management, product development, retail and manufacturing and transportation.
Financial Economics: The students are taught about internal labor markets, IPO mechanisms, inks between bankruptcy codes and innovation, market microstructure, corporate finance theory and financial econometrics to microfinance.
Organizational Behavior: The course is designed to teach the importance of individual to a core team or an organization. The faculty research interests include interpersonal conflicts and relationships at work, deviance in and of organizations, organizational citizenship behavior and negotiations.
Strategy: The student is prepared to engage and address questions related to business strategy. A firm’s response to its competitors and the environment is necessary. Cutting edge research can be carried out in entrepreneurship, organization theory, global strategy and innovation.
Research Mentorship at ISB FPM
The collaboration between the students and the faculty is the hallmark of the program. FPM students are seen as future collaborators and hence, they are helped which seven streams they have chosen to excel at.
ISB FPM Admissions
The Applications open in the first week of September and close in January. The announcement of admission is done in April while the orientation and registration begin from mid-August.
